Racking up the air miles.

I`m jetting about Europe in the next couple of weeks. Firstly I am heading to Soderham in Sweden as part of an audit team from work. I fly to Amsterdam and then from Amsterdam to Stockholm before catching a train to take me to Soderham. I`m glad I`m meeting someone in Schipol Airport who has done the trip before. I`m not the bravest flier in the world and all the high winds in the North East over the last few days have got me nervous. The reason for my nerves is put down to bad experiences I have had while flying.

I was coming back from Lanzarote to Newcastle Airport in January a few years ago when the pilot made this announcement.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I`d like to advise you that we are in for a ropy landing. Don`t worry we have done this type of high crosswind landing hundreds of times."

My first thought was, what did he say that for? He would have been better to keep it to himself and get us down without the worry of this, "ropy", landing in our heads. People all around me were praying and the plane was being thrown from side to side. The wings were never level until we got extremely close to land. We landed with a thump but it was the nicest bad landing I`ve ever experienced. The Air Hostess got on the intercom and said, "Welcome to Blackpool pleasure beach." Oh, you can laugh now I thought, listening to everyone giggle.
I met a guy in the toilet while waiting for our bags and he said it was going to be Britain for him from now on for holidays.

The funny thing is my Sister works for BA and has flown for 25 years. I asked her if she has had any scary moments in all those years and she said 7. I didn`t ask for the details.

The other scary flight I was on involved really bad turbulence, my worst fear. I was flying from Finland to Amsterdam after a work trip and the plane was veering and bouncing violently. You know it`s bad when the Air Hostess`s get buckled up and announce it`s too dangerous to serve food. The older guy I was with from work slept all the way through it, the jammy thing.

My other destination in the next two weeks is Lanzarote, yes the same place I came back from and had my ropy landing. Apart from the landing the last time I was in Lanzarote I fell in love with the Island. I hired a jeep and explored the place and pretty much saw all the island in a week. I stayed at Costa Tequise that time but this time we are staying in Puerto Del Carmen. We are staying at an apartment near the old town and close to the harbour.

I have found a site that does a 15 day weather forecast for Lanzarote and it says the first 3 days will be sunny with some cloud. Let`s hope it`s right.
