Explosion.

After a hard night at work I went home and was in bed chatting to Claire at 7:30 this morning when the whole house shook and there was an explosion. We both jumped up and had a look out the window and all we could see were lots of birds going in all directions.
Claire went off to work and I eventually drifted off to sleep suspecting that someone had had a gas blast. When I woke up at 1pm Claire had left me a text saying that there had indeed been a gas blast just across the park from us. The house was completely gone and one person, an 80 year old lady, had died. I can vividly remember hearing a helicopter above the house early this morning and when I got this evenings newspaper I saw a picture probably taken from a helicopter of the carnage. I had to pass the street tonight 11 hours after the blast on my way to work and the street is cordoned off and there are lots of emergency services present. The newspaper said that the blast happened after a man went to put the kettle on the stove, he is receiving treatment in hospital.
North Shields is a quiet little place but in the 7 years I have been here this is the second big explosion. The first was a small chemical plant that I was unaware existed, there were gas bottles shooting 200 feet in the air on that occasion. I took a video of the whole event and Sky tried to buy the footage from me.
All this has made me remember an occasion when I had a friend called Ian living with me. I came in one morning after a nightshift and could smell a sickly sweet odour in the house. I traced it to the gas being on full blast on my cooker, Ian had come in drunk and left the gas on after giving up on cooking himself something. I immediately opened all the windows and doors, thank god I did not switch on a light or do anything that may have caused a spark. I was extremely angry with Ian and this was one of a chain of events where he let me down when in my house. Needless to say he moved out soon afterwards.
